Background
In the Sly Wink Inn of the city of Sumberton there sits in a corner of the common room at a table all alone a man. He looks to be fairly tall, has wavy black hair, a decently muscular build with a well tanned body, but of his face, little can be discerned as his head hangs down, contemplating the mug of ale in his large hands on the table. He has been staring into his drink for the last half hour, hardly moving at all and the wench serving the customers has learned over the past couple of weeks to not interrupt him, not in anticipation of a tongue lashing or worse, but because he would wave her down once he wanted something.
She could not quite describe how she felt about him or the aura he projected, she felt like she should pity him, but that was not just the right thing to do. He appeared down, almost desolate and was extremely quiet and non-talkative. In the month since he seemed to take up residence here, she had failed to even learn his name and doubted he knew hers, though she had mentioned it at least daily.
"What am I going to do? I need a lot more coin to make repairs and I have to make them or I'll lose my livelihood. But how do I get the money I need quickly before I run out of what little I have and the dockmaster takes my barge for payment of damages and berthing fees?" thought Hanzo Quan as he eyed the ale going stale before him. Who know that something as simple as a hole, one that was below the waterline, could change his life so drastically.
It was just a month ago when Hanzo was arriving at the dock when his carefree, go as he may, life changed with the collapsing of the dock as he tried to berth at it. A support pylon at the end of the dock gave way when his barge was almost halfway past it. The iron capping on the sides provided just enough weight to cause the next two pylons to be pulled down and the corner of the dock shifted sideways into his barge as the dock swung. The whole corner went straight into the wood of his boat under the waterline and there was still enough speed in the drift he was in to rend a deep gash down one third of the ship causing it to take on enough ware to ground her.
Of course, the dockmaster blamed him for causing the disaster and everyone believed him, no matter how much Hanzo tried to convince them otherwise. Now he had to pay for repairs to both the dock and his barge. He almost had enough coin for his own repairs when it all first happened, but he was told that the dock needed to be paid for first, before the workers would cork on his barge. He had no where near the cash required and was told to either raise the funds needed in the next two months or he would have to forfeit his barge in reparations.
Finding only odd jobs that were not even sufficient to meet his living expenses, Hanzo's funds were slowly being depleted. Unless he could raise the money he needed and soon, he would no longer be plying trade up and down the river. Despair has been creeping up on him and he is starting to get close to realistically giving in to it. He finally moves, draining the stale ale in his mug and looks up to signal the wench for moreā¦.
